Exploring Who I Am

5 min read Essays

My interest in engineering and computers began with my father. He is an electrical engineer whose work covers software development, computer hardware, and equipment maintenance. When I was young, I often watched him work. As I grew older, I had more chances to help him and learn about computer maintenance, video and audio editing, and programming. These experiences made me curious about how computers work and led me to explore computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology in high school.

My interest in computers and artificial intelligence continued to grow as I learned more about them. I began to understand that computer science is not only about new technology. It also gives us new ways to understand the world and solve difficult problems. Artificial intelligence has greatly increased the possible uses of computer science. Autonomous vehicles, medical technology, smart homes, and many other systems all depend on computer science and engineering.

I am applying for the Bachelor of Engineering program because I want to gain the knowledge and skills needed to help develop future technologies. Courses such as AI and Robotics, Robotic and Autonomous Systems, Nanoelectronics, Smart Transport and Logistics, and Urban Informatics match my interests. Through these courses, I hope to build a strong foundation in computer science and engineering while improving my practical skills and creative thinking. In the future, I hope to use what I learn to become a capable engineer.

My education has mainly focused on science. In addition to Chinese, Mathematics, and English, I studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. My strengths in logical thinking and problem-solving have placed me among the top five percent of students in science subjects. Outside the classroom, I spent much of my free time learning programming and taking part in competitions in mathematics, physics, and computer science. These activities allowed me to apply what I had learned and improve my skills.

In 2023, I participated in the National Olympiad in Informatics and the CSP J/S Non-Professional Level Software Competency Certification. Preparing for these events strengthened my knowledge of programming and computer science. I later took part in the BoxBot Ground Fighting Masters Programme at the 2023 World Robot Contest Finals. While preparing for the 2024 US Open Contest, I practiced programming problems and improved my ability to analyze algorithms and write code. I eventually received a Platinum Award.

I also worked with teammates in Kaggle’s HMS Harmful Brain Activity Classification competition. The goal was to use automated electroencephalogram analysis to identify seizures and other forms of harmful brain activity. I helped develop a ResNet34 model, and our team earned a Silver Medal, placing us in the top four percent of all teams. This project improved my technical skills and taught me the importance of patience, teamwork, and trying new ideas.

Along with programming, I have challenged myself through mathematics and physics competitions. I received national second prizes in the Chinese High School Mathematics League, the Mathematics and Physics Senior Division, and the National Middle School Students’ Subject Literacy Evaluation Activities. I also received China National Gold in the 2024 Mathematics Competition, National Gold in Division 2 of the 38th PhysicsBowl Contest, and a Distinction Award, placing in the top 25 percent, in the 2024 Euclid Contest.

Preparing for these competitions gave me a stronger understanding of mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics. In chemistry, I received the National Gold Award and Special Merit Award in the Canadian Chemistry Contest. I was also invited to attend the CCO CAMP training program in Canada. These academic experiences strengthened my logical reasoning, independent thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

In high school, I also began to focus more on practical skills and creative projects. One example was my Simulated Traffic Signal project, which received a National Bronze Medal at the 19th China Youth Creativity Competition. During this project, I learned how to turn ideas from the classroom into a working solution for a real problem.

I also took part in the London Institute of Banking and Finance Stock Exchange Challenge. This activity included a financial skills assessment and an investment trading simulation, in which I received a High Distinction. Although finance was different from my main academic interests, the experience improved my analytical skills and gave me a basic understanding of financial markets.

During school vacations, I explored several research topics, including laser generation, the Human Genome Project, air and space technology, 3D printing, and the use of artificial intelligence in electrical automation and control. These experiences allowed me to explore different areas of science and engineering and increased my interest in technological innovation. While working in research teams, I provided technical support and used my background in science to help complete our projects. I also improved my teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

I am especially interested in programming and artificial intelligence within computer engineering. I believe computer skills will become increasingly important across many industries as technology continues to develop. My goal is to become an electrical engineer who works in software design, hardware design, or the combination of the two. This goal comes from my interest in technology and my desire to solve practical problems.

Through an undergraduate engineering degree, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills needed to develop useful technology and contribute to society. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree in computer science or artificial intelligence. I hope to study machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision in greater depth. Through further study and research, I want to understand these technologies better and prepare for a career in computer engineering and artificial intelligence.
