Persistence Turned Weakness into Strength

Youth is often a time when people work hard for their dreams. My story took place in ninth grade, when I was preparing for the high school entrance examination. Like my classmates, I was under great academic pressure. However, I faced another challenge. My physical education results were not good. The physical education exam was worth 40 points and could directly affect whether I was admitted to my ideal high school. I wanted to continue my studies at a good school, so I knew I had to improve. Although I felt more pressure than ever before, I was also determined to make a change.
In the 1950s, Tsinghua University encouraged its students to “work for the health of the country for at least fifty years.” The saying “Health is the foundation of everything” also reminded me of the importance of a strong body. With these words in mind, I made an exercise plan. After school, instead of going straight home, I went to the playground and trained for two hours every day. I kept exercising in both hot and cold weather.
At first, the training was difficult, and my progress was slow. My muscles often hurt, and I could hardly catch my breath after running. There were many times when I wanted to give up, but my goal kept me going. I practiced running, jumping rope, sit-ups, and pull-ups. Each exercise pushed me to my limit, but every drop of sweat brought me closer to my goal.
After months of training, my physical fitness gradually improved, and so did my results. As I became stronger, I also became more confident. More importantly, the experience strengthened my willpower. I learned not to give up when facing difficulties and to keep looking for ways to improve.
Finally, the day of the physical education exam arrived. I entered the exam with confidence because I knew I had prepared well. During the exam, all the time and effort I had put into training showed in my performance. When the results were announced, I knew that my hard work had paid off. I not only passed the physical education exam but also earned excellent overall results and was admitted to Taizhou High School, one of the leading high schools in Jiangsu Province. At that moment, all the effort and sweat felt worthwhile.
Looking back, I am grateful that I had the courage to face my weakness and work toward my goal. That year was not only about improving my physical education score. It also taught me an important lesson about persistence. I learned that if I have a clear goal and continue working toward it, I can make real progress. This experience still encourages me whenever I face a new challenge.
