When AI Meets Aging: Technology with a Human Touch

Dear judges, hello everyone!

As people grow older, illness may become an unexpected part of life. This leads us to ask an important question: Can technology help older adults live healthier and more comfortable lives? Imagine a future in which intelligent systems can detect health risks early, remind people to take their medicine, and call for help when someone falls. Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is helping turn this idea into reality.

This topic is personal to me. In the winter of 2014, my grandfather was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The news placed our whole family under great pressure. Five years earlier, he had also faced lung cancer. These experiences helped me understand how serious illness can affect not only an older patient, but also the entire family. They also made me wonder whether technology, especially AI, could give families more help in the race against time.

AI once seemed like something found only in science fiction, but it is already changing health care. It can help monitor older adults’ health, identify possible risks, and support doctors in making decisions. This does not mean that AI can replace doctors. Instead, it can serve as another useful tool that helps doctors work more quickly and accurately.

One important use of AI is the early detection of cancer. Finding cancer at an early stage can greatly improve a patient’s chance of successful treatment. AI systems can study large amounts of medical imaging data and help doctors identify small signs that may be easy to miss. This can give patients more time to receive treatment. For older adults, whose health conditions may be more complex, this extra time can be especially important.

AI can also support more personal treatment. Every patient has a different medical history, physical condition, and response to medicine. By studying information such as medical records, test results, and genetic data, AI can help doctors develop a treatment plan that better fits each patient’s needs. A more suitable plan may improve the results of treatment and reduce unnecessary side effects. This can help older patients remain in better physical and emotional condition during treatment.

AI also has an important role in rehabilitation. It can help adjust a rehabilitation plan according to a patient’s progress and condition. Rehabilitation robots can assist patients with basic movements such as standing and walking. Some devices can also guide stretching and other exercises that reduce pain and stiffness. These tools can make rehabilitation safer and more efficient while reducing some of the pressure on patients, families, and medical workers.

The value of AI is not limited to hospitals. It can also support older adults in their daily lives. Smart medicine systems can remind them when and how much medicine to take. Remote medical services allow them to speak with health care workers without traveling long distances. Wearable devices and home monitoring systems can track basic health information and contact family members or medical services if they detect a serious problem.

Mental health is another important area. Some older adults experience loneliness, fear, or anxiety, especially when they are ill or live far from their families. AI systems may help identify changes in speech or behavior that suggest emotional distress. They can offer basic support and advise the person to contact a family member or trained professional. However, AI should not replace real human care. Its role should be to help people notice problems sooner and make support easier to reach.

Of course, AI in health care also brings serious concerns. Medical information is private, so it must be stored and used safely. AI systems may make mistakes or produce unfair results if the data used to train them is incomplete. Older adults may also find some devices difficult to use. For these reasons, doctors, engineers, policy makers, patients, and families must work together. AI systems should be carefully tested, clearly explained, and used under human supervision.

To me, the real value of AI is not how advanced it appears. What matters is whether it can help an older person receive an earlier diagnosis, recover more safely, or feel less alone. Technology has a human touch when it responds to real needs and respects each person’s privacy, choices, and dignity.

My grandfather’s experience taught me that illness can change a family’s life in a moment. It also gave me hope that science and engineering can offer better tools for patients and their families. If we develop and use AI responsibly, it can become a helpful partner in caring for older adults.

Let us use technology not only to extend life, but also to make later life safer, healthier, and more dignified.

Thank you for listening.
